Cooking for My Community: Why I Prepare Extra Meals for Those in Need

I remember the exact moment the idea of cooking extra meals for others came to me. It was during my pregnancy, a time that should have been joyful, but physically, it was one of the hardest periods I’ve ever faced. Simple tasks became mountains to climb—one time, I nearly fainted just trying to ladle soup from a pot into my bowl. That’s when I realized how crucial a home-cooked meal is, and how hard it can be to manage even the basics when you’re struggling.

Back then, I would have loved for someone to show up with a warm, ready-made meal. My partner was amazing and did everything he could, but between my limitations and his full-time job, there was only so much he could do. I couldn’t help but think of how many others must be in similar situations—whether dealing with illness, work demands, or life circumstances that make it difficult to get a meal on the table.

Now, whenever I cook for my family, I make a little extra. It doesn’t take much more effort, but it can mean so much to someone else. When I’m out running errands, I drop these meals off to people in my community who could use a little extra support. It’s been one of the most fulfilling choices I’ve made, knowing that I’m providing a little comfort and nourishment to people who might be feeling overwhelmed.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that small acts of kindness can have a big impact. We all need help from time to time, and I’m grateful to be in a position to offer it through something as simple as a home-cooked meal.
